Architectural Barrier Removal Program

The Architectural Barrier Removal (ABR) Program modifies the homes of seniors and people with disabilities who have limited income and would like their homes more accessible. These accessiblity modifications help clients remain in their homes longer and live with a greater degree of independence. All services are free to eligible persons.

ABR Program services include:

  • Wheel chair
  • Handrails
  • Door widening
  • Buzzing or flashing devices (for people with visual/hearing impairment)
  • Accessible door and faucets handles
  • Shower grab bars and shower wands
  • Accessible showers, toilets and sinks

ELIGIBILITY:

  • Age 62 or older OR have a "severe disability" (as defined by Federal regulations)
  • Live inside the Austin City Limits
  • Household earns no more than 80 percent of the Austin Median Family (MFI) (adjusted for family size). See table below for income limits.

To apply for ABR services, eligible persons can:

  • Set up a home application visit by calling (512) 974-3863 or (512) 974-3119.
  • Request an application by mail.
