The City of Austin is growing and so are the opportunities for artists to create public art!
Public art is both challenging and highly rewarding for artists with collaborative spirits and professional attitudes. In order to be successful in the realm of public art, artists must work closely with design professionals, contractors, city officials and community members. Compiling project budgets, complying with contractual requirements and meeting deadlines is also necessary. Art in Public Places staff is there every step of the way to coordinate projects and provide technical assistance.
Artists have found the experience of creating public art to be a turning point in their careers. Not only have they enjoyed the notoriety that comes with having their work permanently installed in a public place, but they have also gained technical knowledge and insight into people that informs their future work.
If you are a professional artist (or serious amateur) with a consistent body of work in any visual art media and a desire to bring your art out into the Austin community, we urge you to join the Art in Public Places Artist Registry now. It is open to artists nationwide, and artists must be registered to be considered for upcoming projects. The Registry is accessible to community groups, businesses and private developers seeking to commission artists for projects. In the recent months, AIPP has seen increased interest, especially from developers, in finding artists to design and create unique artwork for their properties and projects, so the Registry is becoming an important way for artists to gain exposure.
