The Art in Public Places (AIPP) Panel is a standing committee, appointed by the Austin Arts Commission, responsible for advising the Commission on matters relating to the implementation of the Art in Public Places Ordinance (850926-0, 861009-A). The AIPP Panel has seven members, including one representative from the Austin Arts Commission and six visual arts professionals, two of whom represent the environmental design fields, such as architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning or design. Collectively, AIPP Panelists reflect the ethnic, artistic, economic, and demographic diversity of the community. All panelists must possess knowledge of contemporary visual art, trends in the public art field, and be willing to serve in a panel process without conflict of interest.

John Christensen, Artist
Born in New York City, he received a BA from Harvard, in Visual and Environmental Studies, and a MFA from the University of Texas. Before 1990, he developed a body of site-sensitive work in rural landscapes of New York, Georgia and Texas. Since 1990, he has focused that sensibility on projects for the theatre and the public place. He has created, in collaborations with choreographers, interactive props and theatrical environments for 21 productions presented in the Americas, Europe and Asia. He has designed and built commercial spaces, and unique and production furniture. He has completed large scale public and private commissions in Austin, Dallas, Houston, Albuquerque and Miami. Currently he is working on publicly funded projects for Dallas, Austin and Tucson.

Murray Legge, Architect, Artist
Murray Legge, a licensed architect, is a graduate of the Cooper Union School of Architecture in New
York City. Recipient of the 2006 AIA Austin Young Architectural Professional Award his work
ranges from architecture and landscape design to public art. Mr. Legge has won many competitions
and design awards including local, state and national AIA (American Institute of Architects) awards
for his design work. Winner of the prestigious Lyceum Fellowship he was also finalist (twice) in Van
Alen Institute competitions including the Paris Prize. For the past 10 years, he has been based in
Austin, Texas practicing as design and project architect with the firm LZT Architects, Inc. His work
at LZTA includes the design and management of several multi-use sustainable urban buildings, such
as, Austin Resource Center for the Homeless (ARCH) and the Donald Haynes Performing Arts
Center currently under construction. The recently completed ARCH project was awarded a National
AIA award for green building and has been the subject of several recent articles and seminars. The
Austin American Statesman's architecture critic, in her recent review, called the building "...a model
of public architecture". His work has appeared in Architectural Record, Art in America, Texas
Architect, The Journal of Architectural Education and profiled in the Austin American Statesman
and Houston Chronicle. Mr. Legge has taught workshops, lectured and been visiting critic and
lecturer at the University of Texas at Austin.
Mr. Legge also co-founded the multi-disciplinary group, Legge Lewis Legge, based in Austin and
New York which focuses on large-scale public art installations, one of which, designed for Austin's
Central Forensics Laboratory, appeared in Art in Americas 2004 Public Art in Review. Legge Lewis
Legge was the recipient of a 2006 Texas Society of Architects design award for Cup City, a temporary
interactive lounge, honorable mention in the international design competition for the flight 93
memorial and finalist in the Boston Logan Airport 9/11 memorial competition. Legge Lewis Legge
has been recently commissioned to design a public urban landscape in Boston through grants from
the New England Foundation for the Arts, National Parks Service and the City of Boston. Mr. Legge
has taught workshops, lectured and been visiting critic and lecturer at the University of Texas at
Austin.

Sue Graze, Executive Director, Arthouse, Austin, TX
Sue Graze joined the Arthouse staff as Executive Director in January of 1999. Before becoming the Executive Director of Arthouse, she was the Assistant Director of Programs and Senior Curator at the Miami Art Museum, 1997-1999. From 1994 to 1996 she served as Director of the Center for Research in Contemporary Art at the University of Texas at Arlington. In 1981 Graze became the Curator of Contemporary Art at the Dallas Museum of Art after working there as a Curatorial Assistant, Registrar and Associate Curator of Contemporary Art. She held the position of curator from 1981-1990. Graze graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Madison with a B.A. in English. Continuing her education, she did graduate work at the University of California, Riverside in art history and postgraduate studies at Stanford University in art history and museum studies.
ART IN PUBLIC PLACES PANEL APPLICATION
In addition to regular monthly meetings, AIPP Panel members attend many AIPP sponsored events, such as artwork dedication ceremonies, exhibition openings, lectures, tours of potential public art sites, project information meetings, and public hearings, to the extent possible. AIPP Panel members may serve as jurors for AIPP projects. AIPP Panelists act as representatives of the AIPP program and look for opportunities to share information with their colleagues regarding public art commissions and recruit qualified artists, jurors and panelists to participate in the program.
