It's that time again... Summer Workshops from Austin's Art in Public Places program. All workshops are free and open to the public, but seating is limited. Please join us and check back for updates!

Public Art 101: Walk & Talk with Convention Center Artists
Wednesday, July 23, 7 - 9pm
Austin Convention Center (500 E. Cesar Chavez, RSVP for free parking.)


Join artists Ann Adams, Rolando Briseno, Ben Livingston, Damian Priour and Margo Sawyer for an informative & informal stroll around the Austin Convention Center. Hear first-hand from the six artists commissioned to create artwork at the ACC -- pick their brains about their public art experience, rewards & risks, from beginning to end (and hear what they're up to now). They will offer advice and perspectives about making the leap into public art and answer questions from participants. A spiral-bound public art Resource Guide is a take-home freebie.

Public Art Crawl: Volunteer & Find Out About Public Art in Your Neighborhood

Sit back and enjoy a guided downtown tour of the City’s Public Art Collection, meet with a local Arts Conservator to learn about the effect of environmental factors on outdoor art, and then team-up for some investigative reporting on the condition of public artworks throughout the City. Participants become honorary members of the AIPP Task Force 2008 and will be provided with field notebooks and T-shirts to report on the condition of an artwork of their choice. The condition assessments generated from this workshop will be used to develop a plan for the ongoing care and maintenance of public art in Austin.

Digital Technology: Photoshop and More!

WORKSHOPS FULL! Call to be placed on a waiting list.


Refresh your skills in digital technology, reviewing basic and advanced techniques of image manipulation, sizing and resizing, image resolution, creating a digital archive and portfolio, and resources on web development, etc. This workshop will explore the use of Photoshop and share expertise on how to best use digital tools to increase efficiency and effective applications in the art world. A short demonstration of the Application System for Austin's Public Art (ASAP!) will also be included.

Join Arlington-based public artist, Benito Huerta, and Austin-based artist, Connie Arismendi, who have both received multiple public art commissions, to discuss their work and approaches to applying to public art calls. They will share tips and advice, as well as examples of their commmissioned work at the MACC and elsewhere. This is a rare chance to glean useful information from two successful public artists, and find out how they have addressed various site-specific artwork opportunities.

Wondering how to translate your studio work into another medium, one suitable for the public environment? Looking to be inspired by new materials, tools or technology? Find your match in 5 minutes or less- fabricators, suppliers and vendors will be stationed at tables to meet in intervals with artists circulating to the sound of the bell. **Seating for this event is limited: please contact AIPP Coordinator, Katherine Macy (512-974-9308/ katherine.macy@ci.austin.tx.us) to reserve your spot.

Roll up your sleeves for Austin’s Public Art Collection. Join us as a professional arts conservator leads participants in a hands-on wash & wax of the public art with an overview of the proper treatments to care for and maintain the beauty of outdoor sculpture. Following a discussion and screening of the AIPP maintenance video, participants will venture to one or more public art sites for a demonstration and hands-on sculptural treatment.
