Town Lake Animal Center: Cold Weather Precautions for Pets
 |
The Town Lake Animal Center urges local pet owners to protect their pets when cold temperatures threaten the Austin area.

Cold-weather tips:
- No pet should be left
outside for long periods without supervision.
- If a dog is left outside, it must be protected by a dry, draft-free
doghouse that faces away from the wind. The house should be large enough
to allow the dog to sit or lie down comfortably, but small enough to hold
in the dog's body heat. The floor should be raised off the ground and covered
with blankets, hay or other bedding, and the doorway should be covered with
burlap or other cloth material.
- Outdoor dogs need more food in the winter because keeping warm depletes
energy. As always, make sure animals have plenty of fresh water available.
- Warm engines of parked cars attract cats and wildlife in cold weather.
Bang on your car's hood to scare animals off before starting the engine.
- Antifreeze is a deadly poison, and its sweet smell can attract animals
and children. Wipe up any spills immediately, and store all chemicals out
of reach. Nontoxic antifreeze is available.
- Dry heat can dry out your pet's skin. A small amount of vegetable
oil in food will help keep your pet comfortable.
