The Austin Nature and Science Center offers a
variety of hands-on educational exhibits. The
Center is dedicated to providing educational and
recreational activities which increase awareness
and appreciation of the natural environment.
Animal Exhibits
Our animal exhibits feature more than 90 native
Texas animals that can't be returned to the wild.
Stroll through the woods; listen to the calls
of owls, hawks and ravens in our Birds of Prey
exhibit. Visit the tiniest Austin residents in
our Small Wonders Exhibit.
Dino Pit Exhibit
Come learn about paleontology through our outdoor Dino Pit exhibit! Dig up actual replicas of fossils found in Texas, follow dinosaur tracks, and view fossils from the 301 Congress construction site.
Naturalist Workshop
The Naturalist Workshop is a perfect place to explore the natural world: get a close-up view through microscopes and magnifying glasses, use a balance to check and compare objects’ weight and identify your finds with field guides and touchable specimens.
Beverly
S. Sheffield Education Center
The Beverly S. Sheffield Education Center is housed
in the old Barton Springs Pool Bathhouse in the
heart of Zilker Park. The Education Center was
renamed after Mr. Beverly S. Sheffield as a commemoration
of his outstanding contributions to the City of
Austin. Mr. Sheffield began as a lifeguard at
Barton Springs Pool and became the first Director
of Austin Parks and Recreation. After his retirement,
he remained active in issues relating to the Springs.
Splash!
Into the Edwards Aquifer Exhibit
The SPLASH! Into the Edwards Aquifer exhibit,
located in the Beverly S. Sheffield Education
Center, provides a comprehensive educational experience
about the science of the Barton Springs/Edwards
Aquifer and its conservation as a natural resource.
Interactive exhibits include presentations of
real phenomena, live specimens, and working models.
Each exhibit has an emphasis on information relevant
to our community.
