Reporting Fraud, Waste and Abuse of City Resources

The City of Austin is committed to eliminating fraud and maintaining a highly ethical environment throughout our organization. The City Auditor´s office has a number of special audit investigators devoted to investigating allegations of fraud, waste and abuse (integrity violations) in the City of Austin. The City Auditor´s Integrity Unit (CAIU) focuses on integrity violations by City employees or contractors.

Integrity violations include, but are not limited to:

  • Theft or misappropriation of City resources
  • Falsification of official documents or reports
  • Corruption or official misconduct, including misuse of City information, conflicts of interest, or offering or accepting bribes
  • Personal use of City-owned vehicles, equipment or supplies
  • Conducting personal business on City time
  • Improper use or spending of City tax dollars
  • Violations of City procurement policy or contract fraud
  • Tampering with government records
  • Obstructing, retaliating against, or tampering with a public servant, witness, prospective witness, or informant.

The CAIU may collaborate with the Human Resources Department whenever necessary; however CAIU does not investigate routine personnel issues such as employee grievances or complaints relating to civil rights and equal employment.

The CAIU works in coordination with the Austin Police Department, the Travis County District Attorney´s Office, and other law enforcement agencies when appropriate.

If you have information related to suspected fraud, waste, or abuse in City of Austin operations, please report it to CAIU immediately. You may contact us in a number of ways, depending on what is convenient for you. When reporting, you can choose to remain anonymous. City of Austin Personnel Policies prohibit retaliation against an employee for making a report of suspected fraud, waste, or abuse. Any employee who believes that he or she has experienced such retaliation should report it immediately to their department director, the Director of Human Resources, or to the appropriate Assistant City Manager.
