Information at a Glance
Name: Austin-Bergstrom International Airport
Location: Located on the site of the former Bergstrom Air Force Base, in southeast Austin on Texas Hwy. 71 near the intersection with U.S. Hwy. 183. Eight miles from downtown and the State Capitol. Prime position near the NAFTA Highway (Interstate Highway 35).
First in nation: First U.S. conversion of an Air Force Base to commercial airport since the end of the Cold War. Austin's global aspirations were taking place just as the U.S. Air Force was making plans to close Bergstrom Air Force Base, an Austin fixture since World War II.
Finances: $581 million, the largest construction project in the history of the City of Austin. Built within budget. Total airport costs estimated at $800 million (with private investment included). The City of Austin owns the airport. Construction was financed by revenue bonds and federal grants. Approximately one-fourth of the airport construction was paid for with federal grants. No City taxes were used to build the airport, and none are used to pay for operations.
Barbara Jordan Terminal: Named for the legendary U.S. Congresswoman, orator, and civil rights leader, Barbara Jordan, who resided in Austin until her death in 1996.

Character of Austin: The airport immediately reminds visitors that they have arrived at a place that is mindful of its heritage — political, cultural, and natural. A Live Music Stage features local performers. Well-known Austin-based companies operate many restaurant and gift concessions. Landscaping consists of native and xeriscape plantings.
