New nonstop flights flurry begins May 1, 2008, involves 11 new routes, eight new destinations, six airlines

AUSTIN, TEXAS – A total of 11 new routes – including eight new nonstop destinations – will be started by six airlines at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in the first 10 days of May 2008. Water cannon salutes and ribbon cuttings are part of the celebration spread over several days and several airlines.

On May 1, new nonstops from JetBlue, Air Canada, and vivaAerobus take off and that date marks the opening of the new South Terminal for service. The new service begins with vivaAerobus’s celebration at 8:00 a.m. of its first flight out of Austin and the U.S. The first flight is to Cancun. Additionally, vivaAerobus begins service to Monterrey that day. Later on May 1, JetBlue inaugurates its Fort Lauderdale, Fla. nonstop at 1:50 p.m. at Gate 19. Further, JetBlue service from Austin triples that date with the new destination of Long Beach, Calif. (LA) plus adding nonstop flights to San Francisco, Calif., and Orlando, Fla. International service increases to the north on May 1 with Air Canada’s Toronto-Austin nonstop. Air Canada’s inaugural service event will be held 3:30 p.m. at Gate 3.

The following day, May 2, an Indianapolis – Austin nonstop begins on Northwest Airlines. The flight inaugural begins 1:20 p.m. at Gate 3.

The following Monday, May 5, US Airways connects its Charlotte, N.C. hub and Austin. The flight celebration will start at 11:30 a.m. at Gate 20.

The next Monday, May 12, Southwest Airlines inaugurates two new nonstops: one to Ft Lauderdale, Fla. the other to Oakland, Calif. Southwest will celebrate the new service at 11:50 a.m. at Gate 13.

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport has nonstop service to 52 destinations in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Nearly 8.9 million passengers came through Austin-Bergstrom International in 2007. A word about new destinations, flights

The entry of vivaAerobus introduces a new ultra low-cost business model and marks the first day of service for the new South Terminal at Austin-Bergstrom. Daily nonstops on vivaAerobus to Monterrey and Cancun will be flown for as little as $9.99 a ticket (not including fees and taxes).

Toronto is a vibrant financial, high tech, and cultural destination. The nonstop via Air Canada will save business travelers time and open tourism opportunities. Toronto is a major transatlantic gateway and the new Austin flight is timed for convenient connections to Europe.

Ft. Lauderdale represents the first nonstop between Austin and the South Florida market. Ft. Lauderdale offers many connections to the Caribbean and is near Florida attractions such as Miami.

JetBlue’s new nonstop to Long Beach, Calif offers their signature style of service into the L.A. basin.

Indianapolis is an important market in the Northwest route network. Known for the Indy 500 and other sports, Indianapolis is a center for Fortune 500 companies and information technology. Likewise, as Austin is a high tech leader and known for entertainment, the nonstop appeals to business and leisure travelers from both cities.

US Airways Charlotte hub provides easy international connections. US Airways has scheduled twice daily nonstop service between Austin and Charlotte.

Southwest’s new nonstop to Oakland, Calif provides an alternative for reaching the Bay area.
