Public Safety Division: Automatic External Defibrillator
Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is the first Texas airport and only the fourth airport in the nation to be equipped with Public Access Automatic External Defibrillators (AED). During a news conference in the central terminal, airport officials including Austin City Council member Gus Garcia, representatives from the American Heart Association, American Red Cross, and Austin/Travis County Emergency Medical Services unveiled the new AEDs locations. Following the announcement, a short walking tour was provided. The eight publicly accessible battery-powered devices (Agilent Technology Heartstream Forerunner) are labeled with a large red heart and located within approximately one minute of any public location in the Barbara Jordan Terminal on the concourse level as well as the baggage claim level.
Airport employees and the general public may open the cabinets to retrieve the AEDs at any time to assist a cardiac victim who can loose consciousness quickly and die in a matter of minutes. Once a cabinet is opened, an alarm will sound alerting emergency personnel. The first train-the-trainers class on how to use the AEDs was held on Monday, March 27th.
The public access automatic external defibrillators are located in the following areas:
- C18 - Gate 18 - on the hallway intersection corner
- C15 - Near Gate 15 - next to Bergstrom display at the exit to Screening 3
- C11 - At Gate 11
- C9 - At Gate 9
- C6 - On the wall across from Gate 6 (near Harlon's East)
- CM - next to the post office drop box on the walkway between east and west ticket counters
