Public Safety Division: Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF)
ARFF stands for Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting. ARFF is the terminology that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has dictated for the airport fire departments across the nation to use for all official communication and correspondence to the Federal government or any other official entity when speaking about airport fire fighting operations.
ARFF is staffed and operated by Austin Fire Department personnel whose responsibilities are to respond to all airport incidents, and to respond with one unit to within a one-mile radius of the airport for a downed aircraft incident. While the command structure for ARFF is incorporated into the command structure of the Austin Fire Department, ARFF is funded by the Department of Aviation who reimburses the Fire Department for operating expenses, including personnel. Equipment is purchased and owned by the Department of Aviation.
ARFF operates at the airport under the umbrella of the Public Safety Division.
The purpose of the ARFF activity is to provide fire fighting rescue operations and fire prevention services to air travelers and clients of the aviation industry, so they can be provided with acceptable emergency responses. Services of ARFF include: Emergency assistance, inspection of fuel farms, fuel trucks and commercial sites, safety equipment compliance with the Texas State Commission on Fire Protection Certification, compliance with the FAA standards on safety, equipment and training, and medical first responder.
