image of a bicycle rider speeding along on a bicycle

Construction of the Lance Armstrong Bikeway got started on May 29th. The far west section of Veterans Dr and Stephen F. Austin Dr, from Lake Austin Blvd to W. Cesar Chavez, was the first section completed.

On July 27th, 2006 the City Council approved a resolution authorizing the execution of an endorsement agreement between Lance Armstrong and the City of Austin regarding the use of Lance Armstrong's name for the project.

The project, which began as an idea in 1999, is a six-mile bikeway that will enable bicyclists to travel East and West, on a dedicated route, through downtown. The route will extend from Veterans Dr at Lake Austin Blvd on the west side of town to the Montopolis Bridge at US183 on the east side. The bikeway will consist of a combination of off-street concrete trails, on-street striped bike lanes, and on-street signed bike routes.
