The City of Austin fiscal year begins on October 1. In the Spring, the City begins the annual budget preparation process which includes opportunities for citizen participation and culminates with the adoption of a final budget in mid-September.

- Budget Briefing and Public Hearing August 21st - 2pm (estimated): Public Works, Austin Energy. Public hearing to occur no earlier than 6pm.
- Budget Briefing and Public Hearing August 27th - 9am (estimated): EGRSO, NPZD, Watershed Protection and Development Review, Police, Fire, EMS, Parks and Recreation, Library, and Health and Human Services.
- Budget Briefing and Public Hearing August 28th - Public comment on the Proposed Budget and Property Tax Rate for Fiscal Year 2008-2009. Public hearing to occur no earlier than 6pm.
- Council Budget Readings and Adoption September 8, 9, and 10.
- Fiscal Year 2008-09 Begins October 1.
