Introduction
This project is meant to increase interest in and access to the rich history found in local newspapers. Of particular interest is the Black Press, which is a valuable primary source for documenting the history of African Americans. Contents of the kit include:
- Suggestions for use including future educational programs, interpretive materials, and exhibits based on this resource kit
- A resource guide to Austin African American newspaper archives, electronic resources, and printed materials available through the University of Texas, the Austin Public Library, and the George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center
- Examples of interesting articles selected from a variety of Austin African American newspapers over the last hundred years, accompanied by discussion questions to stimulate conversations on race relations in Austin
- A journalism kit that includes Letter to the Editor guidelines for contributing personal thoughts to a newspaper and worksheets for writing a newspaper story
