The Charter Revision Committee is charged with reviewing and reporting on the advisability of a charter amendment proposing single-member districts or a representation framework that includes both single-member and at-large seats for Council member elections.
Austin currently elects all of its City Council members at-large, meaning voters can vote for every seat on the Council. The Charter Revision Committee will make a recommendation on whether some or all of the Council seats should be elected from geographical areas within the city. Those areas are referred to as single-member districts.
Committee members will analyze various election methods and suggest whether a change in the City of Austin election system should be made. If a change is recommended, it will then be considered by the City Council for a charter amendment ballot.
Austin City Council Member Mike Martinez proposed the Charter Revision Committee, and a resolution was adopted April 5, 2007.
