Census 2000 Data Delivery Schedule

Data from Census 2000 have begun arriving. The following information details expected dates of availability and a summary of what's included in each data set.

1) Apportionment Counts January 2001
Geography: National total and state-level totals.
Data Items:

  • Population totals for each state used to allocate legislative representatives and membership in the Electoral College.

Many Texas population watchers were pleased when the first wave of Census 2000 data arrived and the state's population total exceeded the State Data Center's estimate for April 1, 2000. This is a good sign that Census 2000 has avoided the deep undercount of minorities and the poor that was experienced in the 1990 Census. Locally, all indications suggest a more full count in Austin in 2000 than in 1990.

2) TIGER Files. January 2001
Geography: Blocks, Block Groups, Tracts, Cities, Census Designated Places, Counties.
Data Items:

  • Digital Census 2000 geography.

TPSD staff has been working with these recently released TIGER files for the five county Austin MSA trying to determine how much spatial adjustment is necessary to match local geographies.

3) The Public Law File, Redistricting Data. March 2001
Geography: Blocks, Block Groups, Tracts, Cities, Counties.
Data Items:

  • Total population
  • Race and Hispanic origin
  • Voting age determinations

For the first time in its history, the Census Bureau allowed the self-determination of multiple racial identification. The result is 63 race categories and Hispanic origin subsets available for each category. This proliferation of racial categories will undoubtedly prove to cause many demographic headaches. However, it will be interesting to see how demographers around the country deal with this logistic challenge.

4) Summary File 1. June 2001
Geography: Blocks, Block Groups, Tracts, Cities, Counties.
Data Items:

  • Total population
  • Detailed age cohort breakouts by gender
  • Detailed race (Asian breakouts) and Hispanic origin
  • Households
  • Housing units
  • Households by family structure
  • Female and male householders
  • Marital status

Summary File 1 contains answers to and cross-tabulations from the so-called short form census questionnaire. This data set is often referred to as the 100% data, a reference to the fact that the short form is theoretically sent to every household in the country.

5) Summary File 3. June 2002
Geography: Block Groups, Tracts, Cities, Counties.
Data Items:

  • Household income
  • Poverty status
  • Educational attainment
  • Language predominance and linguistic isolation
  • Housing structural conditions and year structure built
  • Journey to work data like commute times and mode choice
  • Vehicles per household
  • Place of work

Summary File 3 contains answers to and cross-tabulations from the so-called long form census questionnaire. This data set is often referred to as the sample data, a reference to the fact that the long form is theoretically sent to one in six households in the country.
