LOW WATER CROSSINGS
Austin is criss-crossed with creeks and tributaries, with many bridges and roadways that go over these waterways. Low water crossings are a silent hazard until a flash flood hits.
Technically, a low water crossing is a roadway that provides a firm surface for vehicles to travel across a waterway. This roadway is clear most of the year during periods of ordinary stream flow but are impassable to traffic during periods of high water.
During a flash flood, these low water crossings become dangerous due to water moving across the roadway. 75% of Austin flood fatalities are vehicle-related!
If you have to cross a low water crossing to get to and from your home, discuss with your family in advance what to do if the water is over the road and you can't get away from the house or can't get home.
During a storm, visit the Emergency Conditions web page for a list of road closures. Never, ever, under any circumstances drive through water even if there is no barricade. Visit our during a flood web page for more information.
