Republic Square Task Force
Summary
The City Council directed the City Manager to convene a stakeholder group for the purpose of developing recommendations for Republic Square Park (see map), including recommendations on short-term plans to improve the design of Republic Square Park as a destination in the growing arts and technology district of downtown Austin and for the purpose of developing long-range recommendations toward the goal of linking Republic Square Park with Plaza Saltillo along the 5th Street corridor.

Status
On January 13, 2000, the Task Force forwarded their report to the City Council. The Republic Square Task Force Final Recommendations report makes recommendations on:
- Park Design
- Park Use
- Transportation, Parking and Pedestrian Issues
- Linkages (transit, cultural and historical)
Issues
The development of downtown Austin is attracting a wide segment of the community to participate in events held in the downtown area, including increasing numbers from the arts and technology community; and this increased development has created a greater awareness of the need for versatile public spaces serving individuals and the various sectors of the community.
Description
The membership of the Republic Square Advisory Committee was composed of the following:
- a representative of the Music Commission;
- a representative of the Arts Commission;
- a representative of the Downtown Commission;
- four representatives from surrounding development projects;
- a representative of the Austin Museum of Art;
- a representative of the Downtown Neighborhood Association;
- a representative of the Parks and Recreation Board;
- a representative of the business community;
- a representative of the Downtown Austin Alliance;
- a representative of the Plaza Saltillo/Olé Mexico;
- a representative of the Children's Museum;
- a representative of the Mexicarte Museum; and
- a community member representing the historical interest perspective
