Austin Downtown Report: Downtown Development Initiatives
Summary
The City of Austin has obtained professional
assistance to ensure that all major downtown land development projects fit
within a broader downtown development context. The consultant team is
assisting the City staff with a program which includes the evaluation of
current or future projects related to downtown development, performance of
market analysis, assisting the City in developing a preliminary financing
plan for a downtown revitalization zone, and developing recommendations for
a downtown development corporation.
Status
On February 5, 1997
City staff made a brief status report to the City Council at the Work
Session. Following the staff report Matt Kreisle made a brief presentation
on the Heritage Austin Program to develop a vision for downtown. On March
18 the Council was given a full presentation on the program. The City is
participating in the process, which also includes other public
jurisdictions, downtown business groups, neighborhood associations and
private citizens.
Description
The Austin City Council has
identified downtown development and housing as a major priority. In
addition, the City has received numerous inquiries concerning retail
development in or near downtown, and is also considering other projects,
