The City of Austin has obtained professional assistance to ensure that
all major downtown land development projects fit within a broader
downtown development context. The consultant team is assisting the City
staff with a program which includes the evaluation of current or future
projects related to downtown development, performance of market
analysis, assisting the City in developing a preliminary financing plan
for a downtown revitalization zone, and developing recommendations for a
downtown development corporation.
Status
At the July 17 worksession Gerald Trimble of Keyser Marston Associates
will brief the City Council on the current progress of the proposed Tax
Increment Finance District reinvestment zone for downtown Austin and the
downtown development corporation.
Description
The Austin City Council has identified downtown development and housing
as a major priority. In addition, the City has received numerous
inquiries concerning retail development in or near downtown, and is also
considering other projects, including a new City Hall and downtown art
museum.
The city staff and downtown consultant were directed to proceed with the
creation of a TIF district and development corporation by City Council
resolution on June 8, 1995. A downtown development schedule was
provided to the Council in November of 1996 outlining the necessary
steps and timeline to implement the Councils' direction.
