Lamar Boulevard BridgeCIP 825-607-2050SummaryIn 1984, voters approved a project to widen the existing Lamar Boulevard Bridge over Town Lake from 4 lanes to 6 lanes. This project will examine alternatives to improve vehicular, pedestrian and bicycle flow on Lamar Boulevard from Riverside Drive to W. 5th Street. The widening alternative would include modification to the existing railroad bridge and evaluation of options for the adjacent 3rd Street bridge. The bridge itself is within the jurisdiction of the State of Texas.StatusPreliminary engineering is underway. Collection of data and surveys of existing conditions are complete. The draft preliminary engineering report to identify alternatives is in progress. The public input phase is planned to begin in spring 1996, after which the City Council will be presented with the alternatives and results of public input before selection of an option on which preliminary engineering will be completed.IssuesFederal ISTEA "Enhancement" funding has been approved for pedestrian/bicycle facilities. TxDOT has expressed that our consultant may design these facilities.$7.3 million in bonds have been authorized, but not issued, for this project. $638,000 are currently available for design and construction of this project. Additional funding authorization may be required for construction. This will be determined as early as possible in the design phase so that other funding sources can be sought. The bond sale scheduled for this project has been modified, delaying the final bond sale until FY 1999. The bridge is officially designated as a historic structure. Approval by the State Historic Commission will be required. The bond sale scheduled for this project has been modified, delaying the final bond sale until FY 1999. The schedule assumes that this may be changed to allow earlier construction. Otherwise construction cannot begin until the project is fully funded.
DescriptionIt is anticipated that the proposed project will widen South Lamar Boulevard, including the bridge, from Riverside Drive to West 5th Street. It will include modification to the existing railroad bridge and evaluation of the adjacent 3rd Street bridge to determine the need for replacement.Basic DataRevised Jan. 9, 1996 Back to the January 1996 Contents To Downtown Map |
