Renovation of John Henry Faulk Central Library

Summary

The John Henry Faulk Central Library is undergoing renovations is closed while work is being done. The library will return to full-day operation on Monday, April 29. The library closed in July for the renovations.

Status

The renovation of the John Henry Faulk Central Library, 800 Guadalupe, is well underway, including replacement of lighting fixtures, ceiling and carpet; installation of an upgraded fire detection and security system; and asbestos abatement. Sunday, April 28, is the date for the grand reopening and renaming of the John Henry Faulk Central Library, featuring Cactus Pryor as emcee, and guests including Molly Ivins, Bobby Bridger, and numerous dignitaries. The event will be held from 3-5 p.m., during which check-out of Library materials will be permitted. The APL Foundation inaugural event will take place from 1-3 p.m., prior to the reopening of the Faulk Central Library on Sunday, April 28.

Description

The major renovation of the building's interior included replacement of lighting fixtures, ceiling and carpet, installation of an upgraded fire detection and security system, and asbestos abatement.

The renovations are the first major facility upgrade since the library opened in 1978. The John Henry Faulk Central Library contains 300,000 items (including books, audio and video materials) and serves 540,000 customers annually.

  • Project Manager: The Department of Public Works and Transportation
  • Funding: The $750,000 facility improvement is a joint project of the City's Library and Environmental and Conservation Services departments. The "Green Lights" energy efficient lighting retrofit is expected to save the City $45,200 annually in energy and maintenance costs.
