Street Reconstruction and Overlay
Summary
The project will provide for the reconstruction and pavement overlay of various downtown street. 2nd and 9th Street will be improved under a single construction contract; other streets will be contracted individually.
Status
- Congress Avenue: The contract has been awarded; construction is on hold.
- Colorado Street: The design is essentially complete; bidding is on hold.
- Brazos Street: The design is in progress; construction is scheduled for 1996.
- 2nd and 9th Streets: The project is currently under construction.
Issues
The possible construction of light rail on Congress Avenue affects the design of Congress Avenue, and would affect bus routes in the downtown area. Adequate design of the street pavement structures depends heavily on the projected amount of bus traffic. Therefore, discussion of light rail complicates decisions on Congress, Colorado and Brazos.
Description
Planned improvements include repair of pavement failures, construction of concrete bus pads, construction of sidewalk ramps, and overlay and striping of the streets. Construction limits for each of the streets are:
- Congress Avenue: César Chávez - 11th
- Brazos Street : César Chávez - 11th
- Colorado Street : César Chávez - 11th
- 2nd Street : Congress - Trinity
- 9th Street : Congress - San Jacinto
