Fire Code requirements and inspection services fall under the auspices of AFD's Emergency Prevention Division. This division, under the authority of the Fire Marshal, consists of five services. These five areas work together to fill different roles in what AFD has termed the Fire and Life Safety Cycle. They are:
Design and review of site plans, building plans and fire protection system plans for new and renovated structures within Austin
Fire and life safety inspections, of both existing properties and new construction
Public education to increase fire and life safety knowledge of Austin youth and adults
Investigations to determine fire causes
Hazardous Materials permitting, following review of requirements for compliance by engineers

The Fire Code that applies to the City of Austin is the 2003 Uniform Fire Code, which was adopted by the Austin City Council.
