AFD plans its hiring process around anticipated needs to hire for the position of Fire Cadet. A timeline for the next process has not been determined. As soon as we have information on the next process, it will be posted on this website. Please check back periodically for updated information.

November 14, 2008 - Wrap Up of 2008 Hiring Process
The 2008 Hiring Process concluded in August with certification of the Final Ranked Eligibility List, which is valid for one year. We hired through rank 60 from this list for positions in Cadet Classes 111 and 112. Individuals in ranks 61 – 86 will remain on the eligibility list for one year from the date of certification. Currently, there are no plans to hold a cadet class in 2009. If you are on the eligibility list and have a change of address or other information, please send an e-mail to FireEmployment with your updated contact information.

September 12, 2008 - Cadet Class #112 Update
Good News! We are finalizing plans for Cadet Class 112 with a start date of September 29, 2008. We are hiring 20 cadets for this class from the Final Ranked Eligibility List. In accordance with Civil Service Law, candidates are hired for the position of Fire Cadet in rank order from the eligibility list. Offer letters have been sent out via e-mail and regular mail to those individuals ranked 38 – 57. Letters will continue to go out as offers are accepted or declined; please check your e-mail regularly. Individuals who are not hired for Class 112 will remain on the eligibility list for one year from the date of certification. At this time there are no plans to start a cadet class in 2009.

August 29, 2008 - Eligibility List Questions
We have received several questions regarding the current eligibility list and the City’s plans for additional hires from this list. Individuals on the eligibility list will remain on it for one year from the date of certification. This means that, depending on your rank on the list, you may be considered for hire if an Academy Class is funded. It DOES NOT MEAN that you are guaranteed a position in any future Academy Class. The decision to hire individuals remaining on the eligibility list depends on several factors, including the construction schedule for new fire stations, the date firefighters will be needed to staff new stations, and funding for the class. Although previous communications indicated we would have a class next spring, the decision on when the next class will be held is currently on hold due to the City’s current economic situation as well as unplanned delays in the construction of our next fire station. We understand this ambiguity is difficult; we appreciate your patience and understanding. We will provide additional information as it becomes available.

August 25, 2008 - Update on Class 111
We have hired through rank # 37 from the Final Ranked Eligibility List to fill positions in Cadet Class 111. Individuals on the Eligibility list who were not hired for Class 111 remain on the eligibility list for one year from the date of certification. Based on the City’s economic situation, any decisions related to hiring additional individuals from this list have not been made at this time. Information will be provided when it is available.

August 15, 2008 - Eligibility List Update
The Final Ranked Eligibility list for Fire Cadet approved by the Civil Service Commission contains the name, rank and final score of all eligible candidates from the 2008 Fire Cadet Hiring Process. In accordance with Civil Service law, candidates are hired for the position of Fire Cadet in rank order from this eligibility list. We have sent out the offer of hire letters for Class 111, which begins on August 18.

Candidates on the Final Ranked Eligibility List who are not hired for Class 111 remain on the eligibility list for one year from the date of certification. We will be sending out additional information to those individuals late next week. We appreciate your patience and realize that you have many questions.

August 6, 2008-Final Eligibility List
The Civil Service Commission approved the Final Eligibility List for the position of Fire Cadet this morning. Once we receive the certified list from the Civil Service Office, we will post it on this site. Letters are being sent out today, via e-mail and regular mail, to those candidates who are being offered a position in the cadet class scheduled to begin on August 18. Letters will continue to go out as offers are accepted or declined; please check your e-mail regularly. Additional information will be posted as it becomes available.

August 1, 2008-Update on Hiring Process
On August 6th, the Civil Service Commission is scheduled to consider the Fire Chief’s recommendation for a certified eligibility list. Immediately following that meeting, those individuals selected for hire for the upcoming cadet class will be notified via email and regular mail. Once the certified list is published by the Civil Service Office, it will be posted on the AFD Hiring Process website.

Update on Cadet Class 111
Approximately 30 cadets will be hired for the class beginning August 18th. These cadets will fill positions that are currently vacant due to retirements. Due to an unanticipated delay in the construction of a new fire station, we are hiring the cadets that will eventually staff the new station next spring. Those hires will be in Cadet Class 112 and will be hired from the eligibility list certified by the Commission on August 6th.
