To schedule a fire inspection, call (512) 974-0160 between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. or
email: FirePrevention@ci.austin.tx.us.
If an inspection is required because of the construction process, or because a business is licensed by an agency that requires an inspection, please prepare by walking through the space and correcting any obvious problems prior to the inspection date. The inspection then will go more quickly and be much more likely to pass. If the inspector feels that the property was not prepared for the inspection, or no one was there to meet him or her, AFD may charge a re-inspection fee of $50 that must be paid in person at the Emergency Prevention Office prior to rescheduling. The same fee also can be applied if the customer calls to cancel an inspection any time after noon on the day prior to the scheduled inspection. These fees have made it possible to maintain a turnaround time of 1-5 days for scheduling an inspection by cutting down on the number of failed inspections and cancelled inspections.
AFD inspectors will do a walk-through or general safety inspection when asked to do so at the request of an
occupant of a residence or business. Sometimes AFD receives complaints about a business or property that has a potential fire hazard. Such complaints often deal with locked or blocked exits, overcrowding, storage or use of barbecue pits on apartment patios and balconies, vehicles parked in fire lanes, or tall combustible weeds and brush against a structure or surrounding a fire hydrant making it not visible. An inspector can be scheduled to check on such complaints.
