All Austin firefighters receive basic training in water rescues, hazardous materials mitigation, and high-angle/confined-space rescues. However, members of AFD's specialty teams have obtained additional training and certifications. These firefighters respond to medical calls, fires, and other "routine" calls, but also are dispatched to provide their special expertise as needed.

The Special Operations Section has evolved into a separate battalion (Battalion 6) within AFD Operations. Three battalion chiefs are assigned to Special Operations (one for each shift) and companies from four fire stations make up the team.

Special Operations encompasses three special disciplines: Hazardous Materials Response, Search and Rescue, and Water Rescue. The Search and Rescue team responds to either confined space or high angle rescues. The Special Operations Section keeps on top of new procedures and technology, ensuring that members maintain their certification and training levels, and obtaining materials and equipment.

The Water Rescue Team operates from a centrally located fire station and firefighters assigned to the water rescue team have the training and equipment to perform dive rescues and recoveries, and assist people caught by rapidly rising flood waters. AFD also has boats available for back-up response at three outlying stations.

The Technical Rescue Team, located at a central fire station, responds to high-angle, confined-space and trench rescues that require the use of ropes and rappelling techniques.

The Hazmat Response Team responds to incidents involving hazardous materials. Three stations are part of the Hazmat Team: one is located in north Austin, one is located in central Austin, and one is located in the southern part of town. The team members are trained to deal with chemical spills, gas leaks and other situations involving hazardous materials.
