Summer 2004 - 1506
Dartmouth Ave, Crestview
When
Cheryl Goveia and Greg Cumpton moved in eight years ago, their
front yard was grass with a few shrubs near the house. They began
converting grass to flowers beds, starting with areas where the
St. Augustine grass was being taken over by Bermuda and weeds.
They've chosen plants to help give their yard an Austin look such
as Rosemary and Texas Sage.

Winding paths divide their backyard into islands
and nooks of grass and flowers. The gravel paths, designed by
a landscape architect, help absorb water when it rains.

Wildflowers, planted from seed,
make up this colorful corner of the front yard.

| Cheryl and Greg
have planted succulents and other drought-tolerant plants
in the sunny strip beside their driveway. They've used a gravel
mulch to add to the southwestern effect. |

Before moving to Austin, Cheryl
lived in Alaska where she learned to plant vegetables in tires
to help conserve heat. Of course, heat isn't an issue in Austin,
but she likes the look of tire planters and continues to use
them for vegetables and herbs. |

They like to reuse "junk"
to give their yard an eclectic look. This fence shows their creativity.
Among the decorations are a tire rim and an old branch.
