Green Garden, protecting Austin's Environment
Award Winning Green Gardens

Spring 2003 - 909 Garner Avenue, South Austin

When Jennifer and Chuck Rice built this home three years ago, they were able to preserve many of the lot's large trees. This has given them the look of a fully grown-out landscape, as well as habitat for wildlife and lots of shade for added energy efficiency.

The porch keeps the house cool by shading large front windows from direct sun. Low-maintenance crushed granite, which allows rain water to be absorbed, has been added to extend the porch living space.

A narrow carpet of grass focuses the eye and creates a calming retreat in the backyard. The design reduces turf area, and the shade tolerant grass uses much less water than a lawn in full sun.   This ornate gate is one of the many interesting pieces which give the back yard the feel of a Zen garden.

Interesting colors and textures are achieved even in these shady conditions.
