Fall 2002 - Harvestman
Cove, Northwest Austin
While
you are out for a stroll or a trip in the car, visit the Green
Garden Award Winning Yard at 7813 Harvestman Cove. You can see
many green gardening principles in action, and the result is an
aesthetically pleasing yard that will require fewer chemicals
and less water to keep it looking beautiful.
This landscape design utilizes graceful beds
of native and well-adapted plants. These beds help reduce the
total amount of turf area in the front yard, helping to minimize
mowing and fertilizer usage.
There is a wonderful diversity of plants in
the beds with well-placed natural limestone boulders as focal
points.

An assortment of perennials and shrubs included
in the new Grow Green Plant Guide are showcased in this yard,
including rock rose, rosemary, esperanza, and russian sage, as
well as grasses such as mexican feather grass and well-adapted
trees such as mountain laurel and live oak.
Drought-tolerant plants and zoysia turf-grass
should provide years of trouble-free beauty to the neighborhood,
and because this yard will require fewer fertilizers and pesticides
to stay healthy, it will contribute to the effort to maintain
a clean aquifer.
