Green Garden, protecting Austin's Environment
Award Winning Green Gardens

Fall 2003 - 6304 Hillside Terrace Drive, Southwest Austin

photo of front landscape and house

The home of Laurel Treviño and Carlos Torres-Verdín is a great example of how a lawn can be a Green Garden. Zoysia grass in the front lawn needs water only every two weeks in the summer, while the buffalo grass in the back yard hasn't been watered since it was established! Although it goes dormant without summer water, buffalo grass looks great right now, and requires little maintenance.

A front bed filled with native salvias, cenizos and limestone rock give the yard a Texas look.

This rain barrel waters the nearby vegetable garden, while the soft buffalo grass needs neither water or mowing.   This native huisache or acacia tree (Acacia farnesiana) has grown a great deal since it was planted just three years ago.

Treviño and Torres-Verdín have a large collection of bonsai plants, including this scotch pine and many native Texas plants.
