Summer 2003 - 2602
La Ronde Circle, Central Austin
Karen
and Lew Gould made their yard into a shady haven with winding
paths. Because of Karen’s sensitivity to chemicals, the
Goulds removed their grass and replaced it with pest and disease-resistant
plants. This also benefits Shoal Creek, located adjacent to their
home.

Julie Clark helped the Goulds design
their garden. One of the challenges was finding plants that would
bloom in the shade. The Turk's Cap, left, adds a splash of red
that attracts hummingbirds. The Purple Heart and Ruellia, right,
add color to shady locations.
The Goulds control drainage in
their garden through rock pathways. The rocks allow the paths
to absorb water as well as channeling run-off. Glee Ingram designed
the pathways. The different sized stones give the paths the look
of a Japanese garden.
