Green Garden, protecting Austin's Environment
Award Winning Green Gardens

Summer 2004 - 12314 Marogot Run, North Austin

photo of front landscape and houseJoan Ivy's house is nestled behind flower beds in the front yard. When she bought the place, there were a few shrubs in front of the house. Joan planted more shrubs by the foundation and added flower beds for color in the sunny area of the lawn along the street and driveway. She designed and installed the garden herself.

Joan has created a circular border of flower beds around the turf in her front yard. Placing drought-tolerant plants at the edge of the lawn helps her water efficiently -- without soaking the street.

photo of backyard

Joan has designed her backyard with practicalities in mind. A hammock sits in the shade with a table perfectly placed for holding a drink or a book. Originally the grass extended past the hammock, but after trying to mow under it a few times, Joan replaced that part of the grass with mulch.

Joan gives her garden a personal touch with plenty of ornaments. In the foreground is a garden gnome. She has decorated the privacy fence in the back by painting flowers and lady bugs on it.
Lantana and Gregg Salvia bloom for most of the growing season.

The pathway (above) divides the shady backyard into an entertaining area to the right with a large mulched patio area and more traditional grass to the left. The mulched patio and the pathway, made from pebbles and large stones, help the ground absorb water and prevent runoff.

Take a closer look at the front flower beds. Lantana, Santolina, Red Yucca and Indigo Spires are some of the plants that are blooming.
