Quail Park Drive

When Mary Milam bought her creekside home on
Quail Park, the yard offered little more than a few ferns, some
neglected St. Augustine grass and some white gravel.

With some imagination and a lot
of hard work she’s created a yard that now offers a variety
of pathways, colors and textures. She’s kept patches of
St. Augustine to break up the beds of native and adapted plants.

| Believing that it’s best
to start small, she first tackled the patch of grass on the
side of her driveway just four years ago. It’s now filled
with crepe myrtle, lantana and sages. |
|
A park bench in the large
bed in front of the front door offers
a place to rest in the shade and enjoy her hard work |

| When
Mary bought the house the previous owner had a large wooden
fence blocking the view of the creek in the back yard. |
|
Wanting to enjoy the amenity,
Mary replaced the wooden fence with a wire one that makes
the yard look more spacious and inviting. |
A Backyard Habitat steward,
she has created an environment that attracts
Yellow Crown Night Herons as well as the more common raccoon and
possum.

|
One of two rainbarrels
helps supplement the yard’s water needs.
|
|
Enjoying her ever-changing
landscape, Mary plans to continue working on the yard. Stay
tuned and we’ll update you on this year’s project
– the as-yet-to-be-planted beds along the sidewalk!
