Spring 2003 - 9101
Spicebrush Dr., Northwest Austin
Peter
Berry's daughter-in-law designed his xeriscape 8 years ago when
the house was built. Native and adapted plants mean the Berry's
seldom need to use any chemicals. Their biggest pest? The deer
that roam their neighborhood at will. The Berry's plant choices
include shrubs such as rosemary and oleander that their four-footed
neighbors avoid.

Oleanders form a beautiful backdrop
to a patio made of river stones. The stones help absorb the water
during rain storms and improve drainage.

Ornamental trees and yuccas form
a pleasant grove of dappled light to one side of the house.

Tucked away in
a shady corner, this birdbath is a source of fresh water,
an important part of any wildlife garden. |

Retamas are spectacular after
a rain, when they burst into bloom. |
