Use these guidelines to create
an attractive and environmentally friendly landscape. They should
also help you save time and money.
- Use Austin-hardy native and adapted
plants because they:
- Require little water
- Reduce the need for pesticides
- Attract wildlife
- Plant trees to conserve energy and water
and improve air quality
- Use compost to reuse organic products and
reduce the need for fertilizer
- Mulch beds to retain water and prevent weed
growth
- Minimize turf and use varieties that reduce
the need for fertilizers and watering
- Don't bag it. Leave grass clippings on the
lawn to replenish nutrients naturally
- Choose porous materials for your walkways
so water can be absorbed gradually
- Use the least toxic products when pesticides
are necessary
- Irrigate efficiently to avoid runoff and
evaporation
