Green Garden, protecting Austin's Environment
principles

Use these guidelines to create an attractive and environmentally friendly landscape. They should also help you save time and money.

  • Use Austin-hardy native and adapted plants because they:
    • Require little water
    • Reduce the need for pesticides
    • Attract wildlife
  • Plant trees to conserve energy and water and improve air quality
  • Use compost to reuse organic products and reduce the need for fertilizer
  • Mulch beds to retain water and prevent weed growth
  • Minimize turf and use varieties that reduce the need for fertilizers and watering
  • Don't bag it. Leave grass clippings on the lawn to replenish nutrients naturally
  • Choose porous materials for your walkways so water can be absorbed gradually
  • Use the least toxic products when pesticides are necessary
  • Irrigate efficiently to avoid runoff and evaporation
