Semiconductors and ChevroletsFirst quarter permitting activity showed fitting uses for a growing Austin: computers and cars. The Motorola Semiconductor Product Sector will expand its manufacturing and office space by a total of 441,489 square feet in new buildings and additions. Growth at Motorola was also reflected in general office development, the next largest permitted use this quarter. Bridge Point Park (81,286 square feet) overlooking Lake Austin at Loop 360 will be rented by the Motorola/IBM consortium. Other office development centered in north, northwest and northeast Austin totaled 286,253 square feet.Three car dealerships began construction, a total of 114,242 square feet. Capital Chevrolet is one of two dealerships to join the "Motor Mile(s)" on IH 35 between Ben White Boulevard and William Cannon Drive. A third dealership will be built at the edge of the Golden Triangle, near the intersection of Loop 360 and MoPac. Other development permitted this quarter included a two-story cinema (71,690 square feet) on Walsh Tarlton Lane, just north of Barton Creek Square Mall and a neighborhood center/pool house (5,002,247 square feet) in the Lamplight Village subdivision, near Scofield Ridge Parkway and FM 1325.
