Austin Travis County Health and Human Services Department

Public Health Services

Consumer Health Programs

The Consumer Health Program encompasses Food Protection, Food Handler Training and Registration, Food Manager Certification and Custodial Care Inspections.

The Food Protection component focuses on the permitting and regulation of nearly 5000 Food Enterprises located in the Austin-Travis County area.

All Food Handlers are required to Register with the City of Austin every two years.  We offer Food Handler Training and Registration through an online training vendor and a classroom training vendor.  You will automatically be registered with the City of Austin through these two vendors.

Our Food Manager Certification component offers a Certified Food Manager exam approved by the Texas Department of State Health Services for food workers. We offer on-line and classroom certification where upon successful completion you will be issued the required City of Austin Food Manager Certificate.  Those food enterprises located in unincorporated areas of Travis County are not required to have a Certified Food Manager.

Custodial Care Inspections covering general health and safety sanitation are provided upon request for: day cares, foster homes and adoptive homes.
