City of Austin Celebrates Community Development Block Grant Week (March 28-April 1)For Immediate ReleaseMarch 25, 2005 Austin, Texas– The City of Austin's Neighborhood Housing and Community Development department is set to celebrate Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) week beginning March 28-April 1. The city plans to celebrate with a retrospective look at CDBG dollars at work and the impact these funds have made for the Austin community. The National Community Development Association which created CDBG week, encourages cities nationwide to celebrate the success and impact of their CDBG programs during the designated week. The goal of CDBG week is to bring attention to one of the best mechanisms for addressing community needs based on citizen input and consultation and to thank elected officials, for- and non-profit organizations and the citizens for their continued support of the CDBG program. Since its creation in 1975, the CDBG program has provided Austin with over $200 million. The CDBG funds are used in a variety of ways including developing affordable housing opportunities for first-time home buyers, renters and existing homeowners; creating and retaining job opportunities; increasing public services to low-income households with child care services, elderly care, services to youth, fair housing counseling; renters rights assistance, bilingual education and neighborhood support activities; creating public facilities; and assisting in the redevelopment and revitalization of central core east Austin neighborhoods like the 11th and 12th Street corridor.
