LeadSmart Program
In January 2007, the City of Austin received a $3.7 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to identify and control lead-based paint hazards in eligible low-income rental and owner-occupied housing over the next three years. Through the City's LeadSmart Program, the grant will provide FREE lead testing and abatement to homes built prior to 1978 where children under age 6 live or spend a significant amount of time and who have tested for lead poisoning.
You qualify for the FREE LeadSmart Program if:
- You own and/or occupy a home in the City of Austin that was built prior to 1978.
- Your household income is at or below 80 percent of MFI (Median Family Income).
- You have a child less than 6 years of age who lives in your home or visits your home more than 6 hours every week.
For more information about how you can have your child or home tested for FREE through the City's LeadSmart Program, please call 3-1-1 or 974-2000. Calls will be answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
