The Austin History Center desires to make its pictorial material as widely available as possible while carefully maintaining the physical and intellectual integrity of the materials. Your interests and the preservation of the materials will be better assured by the observance of these policies and procedures.
- All photographic and digital copies of materials in the AHC collections must be produced in the AHC Photo Lab. All copy negatives are the property of the Austin History Center. Slides, transparencies, prints and digitized images may not be copied or duplicated by the customer. Requests to videotape photographs must be approved by the photo curator.
- All published or displayed reproductions of AHC materials require credit to the Austin History Center, Austin Public Library and should include the photo identification number. The credit line for published and displayed images should read "PICA #####, Austin History Center, Austin Public Library." This credit line should appear next to the published or displayed image. If the item is not a photograph, list it by title or other appropriate description. Please confirm the appropriate credit line with the AHC prior to publication or display.
- Some items in the AHC collection have restrictions on use. It may be necessary for the customer to obtain verbal or written permission from the donor or photographer prior to being granted permission to use the image. Special credit lines apply to these items.
- Permission to publish or publicly display reproductions made from publications must be obtained from the publisher and/or source of the photograph. The AHC can only grant permission to publish or publicly display reproductions made from Waterloo Press publications.
- Alterations of the original image are not allowed in the publication of AHC materials unless special written permission is given by the photo curator. Cropping should also be discussed with the photo curator. The credit line for cropped images should read "Detail from PICA #####, Austin History Center, Austin Public Library." The AHC reserves the right to require a publication proof prior to final use approval.
- A copy of any publication containing reproductions of AHC materials will be sent to the AHC without charge. Customers publishing AHC materials on a website will provide the AHC with the URL for that website.
- The AHC reserves the right to limit the number of photographic and digital copies; to restrict the use or reproduction of rare, valuable or fragile items; to ensure that material from its files is reproduced with integrity; and to charge special reproduction fees on items involving unusual difficulty in copying.
- Requests for copies of graphic items intended for commercial use may be subject to special contractual procedure with the AHC. These requests, as well as any requests not specifically mentioned within the above policies, should be submitted in writing and may be subject to special agreements.
- All responsibility for possible copyright infringement arising from the use of reproductions will be assumed by the customer.
- The AHC gives no exclusive rights for use of graphic material. Permission will be granted for one-time use only. Any subsequent use of the material requires the written permission of the AHC. All other rights, including those of further publication, are reserved in full by the AHC.
