The Austin History Center is closed on Thursdays, when staff and volunteers process archival materials for use by the public. As the collection is inventoried and described, items detrimental to long-term preservation such as metal paper clips and staples are removed. One page documents from newspapers are transferred by photocopy onto non-acidic paper, which is long lasting and does not become yellow with age. Journals and longer items are protected in archival quality Mylar sleeves. Finished materials are placed in new archival file folders and boxes. Once this detailed work is done, the materials can be safely handled in the Austin History Center Reading Room and photocopied while being fully protected.
Preserving the history of the community will enable future generations to understand and connect their lives to the past. The Austin History Center archives provide a valuable record of how ideas and community goals have prospered and changed over time in Travis County.
