Adaptive Equipment for
People with Disabilities

Library materials, adaptive equipment, and software are available for people with visual or hearing impairments. JAWS is available on all public computers. The building has been modified to make it barrier-free. If other accommodations are needed, please call (512) 974-7400 or use Ask a Librarian.

Circulation Services
|
Books can be checked out and returned at the first floor circulation desk. Apply for a Library card at any time, but before 30 minutes before closing. Adult Card application information. Youth Card application information.

Computer Classes
|
Free computer classes are offered for the public each week. Class topics include Basic Computer Skills, Introduction to the Internet, and Introduction to Excel. Current class schedule and registration information.

Computers for the Public
|
Forty-two PC workstations with Internet access and Microsoft Office are located on the second floor, and are available to the public with a Library Card or Photo ID. Eight Express Internet computers are located on the first floor. Register for an account at the Reference Desk on the second floor.
Dell Wired for Youth Center offers eight workstations to youth under 18. For more information, see Internet Access or call (512) 974-7400. Wireless access is also available as well as a limited number of electrical outlets and Ethernet ports.

Fiction Collection
|
Fiction, Mystery, Romance, Science Fiction, and Westerns are located on the first floor, arranged by type of fiction and author's last name. Paperbacks are shelved separately. Themed reading lists created by Fiction Librarians are available in the Library and online at Good Reads.

Friends Book Sale
|
Ongoing Friends of the Library book sale is located on the first floor near the elevators. Suggested donations are $1.00 for paperbacks and $2.00 for hardbacks.

Library Tours
|
Reservations for group tours of the Central Library can be made by calling (512) 974-7400. Librarians will be happy to discuss your tour needs when you call.

Literacy and Adult Education Collection
|
Circulating books for adults learning to read English are located on the second floor. Included are recreational reading, life skills, English language study materials and literacy tutor guides. Materials are indicated by "LAE" at the end of the call number, and are shelved with New Immigrants Center materials. Also available is a computer with computer tutorials. Software includes Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing, Typing Quick and Easy, Resumes Quick and Easy, and How to Master Microsoft Office (2000).

Magazines and Newspapers
|
Faulk Central Library subscribes to more than 500 periodicals, including newspapers from many Texas cities. Check the online periodicals search for titles held at Central. Many more periodicals are available in the online databases.

Multimedia
|
Books recorded on audiocassette and cd, music cds, LPs, and dvds are located on the first floor. Feature films have a DVD 791.43 call number.

New Books
|
New books are shelved on the first floor, south of the staircase. Feel free to browse and check out some of our newest fiction and nonficiton books. There is a separate New Books area in the youth section on the first floor.

New Immigrants Center
|
Resource center for studying English as a Second Language and U.S. citizenship is available on the second floor. Customers are free to use the software, videos and audios available at the center. Free brochures are available from local agencies that assist newcomers to the United States in a variety of matters such as legal and social services assistance.

Nonfiction Collection
|
Circulating adult nonfiction is located on the third floor. Oversized books are shelved in the southwest corner of the floor.

|
Online Databases
|
Information on all subjects is available via online databases.
Computers are reserved for users of these databases in the second floor reference area.
Most of the databases are available remotely to Austin Public Library cardholders.

Parking and
Transportation
|
Metered parking in the library parking lot and around the building charges 25¢ for 15 minutes. Parking is free after 5:30 p.m. Monday though Friday and on weekends. 44 bus routes come within a few blocks of the Library. Contact Capital Metro at (512) 474-1200 for the route best for you. Reference Services
|
Flagship reference collection of Austin Public Library is located on the second floor. Collection includes 24,994
print sources, as well as online access to over 100 indexes and full-text online databases. Professional librarians at the second floor Reference Desk are available to provide research assistance during all Library hours. E-mail reference questions to librarians using Ask a Librarian!.

Tax Forms
|
Reproducible tax forms for current and past years are available year-round. Giveaway forms are available during the Library's tax season, mid-January through April 15.

subject area or about Library resources, services,
and policies. Customers may also request
searches for items at Central Library. Telephone Reference is available Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-9 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.. and Sunday 12 noon - 6 p.m.

World Languages Collection
|
Circulating collection of books in over 30 different languages, as well as bilingual books in English and another language, is located on the second floor. Contains adult-level fiction and nonfiction. Emphasis is on materials in Spanish, Chinese, Korean, French, and German. Other languages include Czech, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Korean, Japanese, Latin, Portuguese, Russian, Urdu, and Vietnamese.

Youth Services
|
Materials for infants through middle school are shelved in the west end of the first floor. A Michael and Susan Dell Wired For Youth Center is also available. Check the link below for regularly scheduled storytimes and other special events.
