Letter from the Mayor
Dear Friends:
As Mayor and on behalf of the City of Austin, I invite you to participate in the third annual Mayor's Book Club and Keep Austin Reading program presented by the Austin Public Library. The Mayor's Book Club encourages all Austinites to read the same book at the same time to create a citywide book club. This summer, we have selected All The Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy. We invite all of Austin to read the book over the summer and then in the fall get together and discuss the book at your local library. For a third year in a row a partnership continues between the City of Austin and the University of Texas. The UT Humanities Institute will work with the Austin Public Library to assist with discussion groups about All the Pretty Horses in the fall.
An award-winning novel, the book is set in the southwest, McCarthy's sixth novel is the first volume of "The Border Trilogy." A coming-of-age story set in the forties, it's a story of a young man who rides to Mexico from Texas to find work with cattle and horses.
The book and renowned movie, available both in English and Spanish at all library locations and at area bookstores, should be entertaining and educational for all to read and watch in Austin.
Please join one of the many book discussions planned for libraries in August and September. The Keep Austin Reading program will culminate with a free public program at a local venue to be announced.
Whether you read and discuss this book with friends or attend one of the special programs, I am sure you will find the experience enriching and thought provoking.
Thank you for participating in the Mayor's Book Club and our Keep Austin Reading program.
Regards,
Will Wynn
Austin Mayor
