Letter from the Mayor
Dear Friends,
On behalf of the entire City of Austin, I would like to invite you to participate in the fourth annual Mayor’s Book Club and Keep Austin Reading program presented by the Austin Public Library. The Mayor’s Book Club is designed to bring readers together from throughout our community and create a citywide book club. This summer, we have selected Writing Austin’s Lives–A Community Portrait written by the people of Austin. We invite all of Austin to read the book over the summer and learn more about what makes our city so great. In the fall, we ask you to join together and discuss the book at your local library. The University of Texas Humanities Institute will unite with the Austin Public Library, for the fourth year in a row, to assist with discussion groups about the book in the fall.
Writing Austin’s Lives–A Community Portrait provides an intimate portrayal of the unique individual experiences that shape Austin. The book brings together 127 original visions, from varying ethnic backgrounds, in order to present a living history that can not be found in any guidebook or newspaper.
The book, with stories in both English and Spanish, can be found at all Library locations and area bookstores. This book should be informative and entertaining for all.
Please join one of the many book discussions planned for libraries in August and September. The Keep Austin Reading program will culminate with a free public program at a local venue to be announced.
Whether you read and discuss this book with friends or attend one of the special programs, I am sure you will find the experience enriching and thought provoking.
Thank you for participating in the Mayor’s Book Club and our Keep Austin Reading program.
Regards,
Will Wynn
Mayor
