As co-chair for Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros 2001, I wish to thank our numerous donors for their part in making this event truly memorable. They are too many to name individually, but each gift was useful and highly appreciated. Our main sponsors were The Tapestry Foundation, IBM, The Junior League of Austin, The Austin Public Library Foundation, The Austin Public Library, Lakeway Printing, Morgan Printing, H-E-B, UT Center for Mexican American Studies, Scott Foresman Educational Publishers and the Austin American Statesman.
Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros is an annual event focusing on reading, literacy and library use among the Latino population. We were honored by the presence of three children's authors—Margarita Robleda Moguel from Mexico City, Carmen Tafolla from San Antonio, and Magdalena Cárdenas García from Saltillo, Mexico. In addition, we hosted many storytellers, readers and performers. More than twenty community agencies provided hands-on activities for children and information for parents. Nearly 2,000 people attended this event on Saturday, April 28, at the Southeast Austin Community Branch of the Austin Public Library.
We thank all those who attended the event and hope that you will not only attend next year, but will invite friends to go with you. In addition, I thank the planning committee members who gave so much of their time, energy and organizational skills to make this happen. Finally, a big thank-you to all of the community organizations who participated by providing the children with many interesting things to make and do.
Even as we are finishing up the final details related to this year's Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros, we are already beginning plans for an even better event next year. We trust that those who have supported us so generously in the past will continue supporting us in the future so that we can reach even more people with the message that reading is not only essential but fun.
Sincerely,
Deborah Coronado
