In memory of Lady Bird Johnson the Austin Public Library would like to pay tribute to a great lady. Up until her stroke a few years ago, Lady Bird frequently visited the downtown Faulk Central Library to check out the Library's latest collection of audio books. She was also frequently seen using the Austin History Center's reading room. One staff member recalls a time one evening when the Austin History Center's reading room was quiet, and in walks Lady Bird, her daughters, grandchildren, and not too far behind were two gentlemen in dark suits, one could guess, Secret Service agents. Lady Bird used the Austin History Center archives as a way to remember and share with her family moments in their lives.
In June 2006, Lady Bird Johnson supported a fundraiser, Austin Stories : A Gala Celebrating Libraries, Wildflowers & Historic Places presented by The Driskill Hotel. The event supported both the Austin Public Library Foundation and the Wildflower Center. Lady Bird was Honorary Chair along with her Co-Chair First Lady Laura Bush. Mrs. Johnson was unable to attend due to her health, but in her place were her daughter, Luci and her daughter. The event was a huge success for both organizations.
Austin has much to thank this great lady for. Her memory will live forever in our books, archives and along the shores of our beautiful Town Lake!
