NOTES:

Cyber crime is in the news every day, but consider the following:

  • Intrusion of a government computer system that tracks the position of the U.S. Air Force fleet
  • Attacks against the U.S. Pentagon that appeared to be coming from Iraq, but weren't
  • Hacking of the International Space Station
  • Manipulation of the NYSE resulting in hundreds of thousands of dollars in unearned profit
  • Crippling attacks on the Web sites of Microsoft, eBay, Amazon, Yahoo and CNN
  • A digital strike that shut down an entire airport
  • Virtual assault on a city-wide 911 center, taking it out of service
  • Extortion against banks and online services with credit card records

What do all of these events have in common? These cyber crimes were all committed by kids!

Our nation spent the end of the 20th century building educational infrastructure and "wiring" our schools to the Internet, yet cyber ethics for our youth has not been made a national educational priority. With a solid understanding of cyber ethics, the next generation will learn to be responsible computer users.

"As a leader in network security technology, we are well aware of the cyber crimes being committed across this country on a daily basis," said Chris Tammen of SecureLogix Corporation. "SecureLogix is committed to promoting computer ethics, and the Austin Public Library is an excellent partner for us as we reach out to the youth of Austin."

Copies of the book will be placed into circulation at each of the 19 Austin Public Library branches. The books will also be provided to youth participating at the six Wired for Youth Centers and in Summer Reading Program Outreach events.
