Riverside Drive Branch Holds Jubilee Event on August 25

The Riverside Drive Branch of the Austin Public Library, located at 2410 East Riverside Drive, will hold its Jubilee Event on Saturday, August 25, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Austin Public Library.

Guest speaker will be Willie Kocurek, a notable person in the education world, and a longtime Library supporter. Activities will include a shadow puppet show by the Seriously Silly Sisters, balloons for the children, a Mystery Whodunit presented by the Mystery Book Club members, and a Web Scavenger Hunt by the Internet trainers. On display will be architectural drawings and a working model of the new Daniel E. Ruiz Branch (the future replacement for Riverside Drive Branch). Music will be provided by the Guerrero Family, a local group from Montopolis, and there will be refreshments for everyone.

About Riverside Drive Branch
Riverside Drive Branch serves a diverse community in many specific areas of its collection of 38,000 volumes. It has an extensive collection of materials in Spanish for children and adults, a core collection of materials on career and job-related topics, adult basic education, and language and literacy resources for the members of the community who do not speak English. The periodicals section has 110 titles with 15 in Spanish. For the senior members of the community there is a wide range of mystery novels, large type and self-help topics, and for the student population there is information on grants, college guides, computer topics, and extracurricular reading.

The programs and services offered by the Riverside Drive Branch are many and include: a Job Information Center; VICTORY Tutorial Program, a service that coaches students who are having difficulties with their schoolwork; a Wired for Youth Center, a computer center designed for children under 18; an Internet Training Center; the Austin Mystery Book Club; Opportunities for Youth Program, a community outreach service to encourage youth to visit the library; Tax Counseling for the Elderly, and the Annual Mexican Posada, which is an annual event in December.

Last year the Riverside Drive Branch served over 80,000 customers with over 150 adult programs, and over 200 children's programs. Internet usage at the branch was active with over 10,000 using the computer centers.
