Terrazas Branch to Celebrate Jubilee

The Terrazas Branch of the Austin Public Library, 1105 East César Chávez Street, will present a Jubilee Celebration from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 13, in honor of Austin Public Library's 75th anniversary.

Features include a presentation by the Ballet Folklorico from the A.B. Cantu Pan American Recreation Center. The children and their parents who have been participating in Terrazas Branch's guitar classes will perform along with Los Jóvenes Latinos. The celebration will conclude with the bilingual puppet show "El Tigre." Refreshments of tamales, queso, aguas frescas, and pastel will be provided.

The event is free and the public is invited to attend.

About Terrazas Branch
Terrazas Branch was dedicated February 10, 1976, and named after Austinite Henry Terrazas, who perished in a California forest fire with four other Marines in 1966 while awaiting his orders for Vietnam. The branch was built to serve the Hispanic population of East Austin, currently a community of about 10,526 people.

Part of the Wired for Youth Program, Terrazas Branch offers six computers for youth up to 18 years of age. The branch also participates in the New Immigrants Project, providing a computer to help new immigrants access immigration information, a VCR to view videos for learning English, and a CD/tape player for listening to language tapes. Terrazas serves as the host for the Spanish Info Line, providing telephone reference to the Spanish-speaking customers of APL. The branch has a collection of 33,304 items and houses one of the largest collections of Spanish materials and titles by Hispanic authors for children and adults; approximately 20% of the collection is in Spanish. Programming is geared toward working with children and with the three elementary schools that are located nearby. Terrazas recently won the Giant Step Award for its youth Library Card outreach programs with Sanchez Elementary School. The branch also serves as a site for the VICTORY tutoring program and is involved in the annual Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros literacy event.
